If you have a Windows system, a Taskbar loaded with many programs can hinder Britannica Student Library CD performance. To reduce the number of active programs on the Taskbar at the bottom of your Desktop, close any unused programs while using Britannica. If you have a Macintosh system, you can use the OS X 'Dock' to view and close these programs (running tasks are denoted by the presence of a small black triangle beneath the icon).
In some cases, it may be necessary to disable your virus scanner while running the Britannica application. Most virus scanners come configured to scan all files that are opened by any running program. Since Britannica's data files are highly compressed and complex, this sort of real-time scanning by your virus program could adversely affect the program's performance. For information on how to disable real-time scanning, please see your virus-scanner's documentation.
Although you do not need an Internet connection to run Britannica Student Library CD, a connection to the Web does allow you to search Web sites and online magazines, as well as explore our library of online videos.
